Missy Higgins – Everyone’s Waiting

Missy’s back, and we’re happy to have her. She returns to the spotlight with one of her (and this year’s) finest singles.

For lack of more creative prose – and for want of more unnecessary puns – everyone’s been waiting to hear some new material. Yes, I’m aware The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle has been out for the best part of two months, but only the other weekend did I make a necessary trip to JB Hi-Fi*.

Importantly, it’s quite the gem. The expectation seemed to be that Missy would trek further down the rootsy path. Yes, she has, though not as noticeably as some suggested. The old Missy still shines often enough.

As for her 2nd single, Everyone’s Waiting, it’s an immediate standout – surely the favourite to take out the ARIA for Single of The Year. I have to admit, this has been happily playing on a loop on my i-Pod lately and, for the past month and a bit, repeated many a time via You Tube. It’s like the timeless lyricism of The Special Two, the understated beauty of Where I Stood and the opening verse of Augie March’s classic One Crowded Hour effortlessly and seamlessly teamed up to reach musical agreement. Probably around some campfire.

Anyway, it also encompasses that TV-soundtrack-ready quality, already having passed the test with flying colours as Channel 7 replayed the Revenge finale promo over and over…and over again recently. I think it may have had a run during promos for the penultimate one too (I watch plenty of footy – Seven tended to milk the whole Revenge thing as much as they possibly could). Speaking of TV slots, her label in the US are shopping the track around TV networks for the upcoming season, which could mean another Australian-made stateside smash.

*I finally was able to pick up my Stereo, a digital radio with an i-Pod dock and CD player. We regrettably had to part ways for 8 weeks, such was the repair job. So I dined out on music purchases. Thank God I have my music back.
