Have a random idea. Come up with a few more random ideas. Put them together and then you have a song. This method Vance Joy (aka James Keogh) apparently employs for cobbling together tunes works just fine. Better, in fact.
Around mid-2012 (sometime between June & September), a casual listen to Triple J Unearthed one Sunday afternoon paid off. This little-known track, Riptide, by an artist known as Vance Joy (real name James Keogh) pricked these ears and left a mark. Attempts to track down an audio clip of the tune from cyberspace eventually succeeded and thus it became that ‘little’ treasure nobody else knew about. It has been much enjoyed, with a release much awaited…
It’s that time again, where people review what happened during the year. One such time-honoured tradition is the year-end list, this particular one music-related.
In 2011 there were a couple of clear standouts – Adele & Gotye. Contrastingly, in 2012 such a mantle has really been up for grabs throughout. While there hasn’t been a shortage of quality releases during the year, deciding on who stands head and shoulders above the rest has been nigh on impossible. We (eventually) came up with a top 50.
